Avni P. Patel

Senior Associate 212 335 2041

An experienced litigator and trial attorney, Avni has represented both individuals and corporate clients in complex, sensitive, and high-profile matters. Her practice focuses on white-collar criminal defense, government investigations and regulatory enforcement, and complex litigation. Avni has represented individuals and corporate entities in federal, state, and local criminal and regulatory matters.

At Walden Macht & Haran, Avni was part of the trial team who successfully defended a corporate client in a high-profile public corruption case in the Southern District of New York (SDNY). They won the only acquittal in the highly contested and publicized four-defendant trial. She also is part of the WMH team representing one of the most significant whistleblowers in sports history. WMH’s representation of the client, and his cooperation, directly resulted in the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban the Russian National Olympic Team from competing under its national flag in the 2018 Winter Olympics due to his unveiling of a state-sponsored doping program in Russia. Additionally, Avni was also on the leadership team of the independent monitor named by the U.S. Department of Justice to oversee General Motors’ compliance with its obligations under the deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) stemming from its recall of defective ignition switches.

Before joining Walden Macht & Haran, Avni served as an Assistant District Attorney for five years in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. In those five years, Avni gained significant courtroom experience and tried over 15 felony and misdemeanor cases to verdict — five of them to jury verdict — on charges ranging from attempted murder to grand larceny. Avni worked on cases across jurisdictions, in other local New York State boroughs, counties, and in the SDNY to reach global dispositions and negotiations. She was appointed the Bias Assistant District Attorney by District Attorney Robert T. Johnson, and, in that capacity, worked with detectives in New York City’s Hate Crime Task Force to prosecute hate crimes in Bronx County vertically, from arrest to indictment, and through to eventual disposition, whether at trial or by plea negotiation. Avni previously served the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in Boston as a certified prosecutor and as an extern for Congresswoman Kay Khan of Massachusetts, working on state level legislation.

Avni is a graduate of Boston University School of Law, where she was the Executive Editor of Communication of the Review of Banking and Financial Law, and a graduate of Northwestern University, with honors, with a B.S. in Social Policy and Education.
